I was recently talking to one of our Chatty Cats Care clients (Ollie’s Mum) and she recommended this great product that she purchased for Ollie. She explained that she purchased two mats; as she puts one in the refrigerator while Ollie is sitting on the other. I thought this was a great idea for my cat Gerry as he is a long-fur British cat and definitely feels the heat with all that fur during the summer.

While Gerry didn’t mind sitting on his new cooling mat when it arrived, I feel like the novelty wore off a bit and he opted for a cool spot under the dining room table instead. However, I didn’t try to refrigerate the mat as my client did because the box actually explains that the mat is self cooling; I also didn’t like the thought of putting it in the fridge for hygiene reasons. But I may put the mat in a bag and then place it in the fridge to see if Gerry may respond to it more. I purchased the mat on Amazon and it was quite affordable at £7.10 with free delivery.

What I like about the product

  • A bright Blue colour that is easy to spot

  • It is self cooling

  • It’s non-toxic

  • Easy to clean

  • It can be refrigerated

  • An easy way to keep fur babies cool

    Areas for improvement

  • A cat specific mat that possibly contains cat nip to keep the cat attracted

  • It may tear easily if your cat has sharp nails

  • Some cats prefer the box rather than the product

  • The mat is quite small and may not fit a large breed cat like a Maincoon

  • No paper work in the box to assure that it is completely pet safe

As mentioned above some cats preferred the box to the actual mat and Alfie is a prime example of that

Some cats love it and some cats just love the box it comes in. I like the idea of the product, however I think it could be improved and more suitable for cats.

It’s always a good idea to try a few different methods for keeping your cat cool during the summer as all cats are different and are receptive to different things. I found this useful video made by the RSPCA with some great tips.
